[August 15, 2023, Tucson, AZ] – The Center for Leadership Ethics at the University of Arizona’s Eller College of Business is pleased to announce the 2023 Executive Ethics Symposium, which will take place on August 25th, 2023, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am AZ Time. This highly anticipated event will be live streamed to a global audience, further expanding its reach beyond the local business community. Local attendance is by invite only, as space is limited.
The Executive Ethics Symposium is a prestigious annual gathering that brings together distinguished leaders from the private, public, and non-profit sectors to engage in thoughtful discussions on the ethical implications of contemporary business topics. Under the stewardship of Dr. Paul Melendez, Professor at Eller College of Business and Head of the Ethics Center for Leadership, this year’s symposium will delve into the profound influence of artificial intelligence, with a specific focus on the emerging technology known as ChatGPT.
Dr. Paul Melendez, in anticipation of the upcoming event, stated:
“The Center for Leadership Ethics has a penchant for identifying, showcasing, and unpacking emergent ethical issues that have profound societal implications. Over the years, our Executive Ethics Symposium has examined socially responsible investing, facial recognition technology, and cryptocurrency. This year, we’ll tee up the nascent technology, ChatGPT. ChatGPT has taken the business and educational sector by storm. The technology holds great promise, but also presents various perils. The Executive Ethics Symposium will assemble a panel of world experts to understand the impacts of ChatGPT and provide thoughtful, practical, and ethical suggestions for the responsible use of ChatGPT that will benefit all stakeholders.”
The 2023 Executive Ethics Symposium will feature prominent industry leaders, esteemed scholars, and experts in artificial intelligence and ethics as panelists. Doug Zanes (founder and attorney at Zanes Law Injury Lawyers) and his wife Claudia, who are honored to support this event, emphasize the value it brings to the business community at local, national, and international levels. He highlighted:
“What was once a local symposium is now streamed worldwide and is a testament to the Center’s dedication to creating a sustainable and morally conscious business environment. The Center invests in our business leaders and hopes to foster ethical decision-making in all aspects of business. This year’s symposium will focus on the profound influence of artificial intelligence and the ethical considerations it raises. By sponsoring this event, we hope to both facilitate critical discussions and educate the audience in order to inspire innovative solutions that promote responsible AI adoption.”
The event’s agenda includes a welcome address from Dr. Paul Melendez, followed by a panelist discussion at 9 am, and a Q&A session at 10 am. Panelists for the symposium include:
– Matt Hashim, Associate Professor of MIS, Eller Fellow, University of Arizona
– Greg Heileman, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Arizona

The 2023 Executive Ethics Symposium promises to be a platform for engaging dialogues on the ethical implications of ChatGPT, exploring its exciting and emerging dimensions.
