Nissans and Rusty Floor Boards?!

Do you remember in the Flintstones where Fred had to ‘drive’ his stoney age mobile with his feet?

We know this may be a memory stretch for some of you 😉 But for hundreds of Nissan motorists, their feet are coming awfully close to the pavement, giving Fred Flintstone a run for his money.

As of today over 400 motorists have complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of rusted-out Altimas rolled out between 2002 and 2006.

Car owners are claiming that the bottoms of their older-model Nissan Altimas are rusting through, potentially putting their feet awfully close to the road without the proper shoes to match!

Although a comic scene to think about, the drivers of these rusting Altimas seem to think otherwise – many in fact fearing for their safety.

“This is not a good thing,” states one Chicago-area realtor, after her mechanic examined the corrosion on the floor pan of her 2005 Altima.

“This is not safe. I drive every day for a living. This is very nerve-racking for me to be driving now.”

Some car owners are residents of states with heavy snowfall, where road salt can contribute to the erosion of the metal by the floorboards — but not all of them. In fact Nissan Maximas from the same period had far fewer complaints according to NHTSA.

Although the cause is unknown, several mechanics believe the problem could be linked to a design flaw preventing water from draining, causing floor pans to rot from the inside out.

Nissan said it has no plans to order a recall and notes that corrosion in older cars is not unusual.

“This issue is not considered a safety defect by Nissan or the government agency that administers safety recalls,” the automaker said in a statement.

Now, it’s safe to assume these rusty floor boards may be causing auto accidents due to the unexpected distractions of the floor boards.

For all you Nissan Altima drivers out there – keep your feet off the road while driving – if you can help it!
